Spacepak – Central A/C For Radiator Heated Homes

For many years before the advent of Spacepak, owners of older homes with radiator heat, were struggling to find a way to add central air conditioning onto their homes without having to tear apart their structure. Installation of normal ductwork for A/C systems would generally require removing large sections of walls, floors, or ceilings, or adding unsightly chase boxes. However, with the advent of the Spacepak product, all these concerns became a thing of the past. These quiet systems distribute high velocity cooled air through small 2” flexible tubes that can be threaded through floor, ceiling, and wall cavities to reach every room without major remodeling and mess.

Spacepak History

The Spacepak system can be categorized as a high velocity system, or a min-duct system. The system was first invented in 1946 by an engineer, Calvin McCracken (1920-1999) in a home in River Edge, New Jersey. The system was named Jet-Heet, since it’s basic design, incorporated some of the principles of the jet engine. This design used a furnace to deliver hot air through small insulated ducts to rooms throughout the house.

In 1960, fourteen years after the initial installation, and after 2000 similair installations, the Jet-Heet system went into quantity production. At Jet-Heet, the product evolved into adding a companion air conditioning component to their system, called Jet-Cool. Over the next few years the company became very successful and caught the eye of a company called Space-Conditioning Inc. located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Space-Conditioning purchased the Jet-Heet company, and you guessed it, changed the name of the the product line to Spacepak. The rest is history. Since that time, til today, Spacepak has been synoymous with the highest grade central air conditioning system.

What Are Spacepak Systems

Spacepak is a high pressure forced air delivery that can be designed to provide central cooling, and heating throughout the entire house. This system utilizes a special air handling unit that generates high pressure air, forced through small diameter ducts. The main supply trunk is either a small rectangular or round supply duct that supplies air to flexible, insulated 2” diameter feeder ducts. Air passes through sound suppressed tubing at the end of the duct run before entering the room through a plastic termination plate which is approimately the size of a compact disc. These systems use standard outdoor condensing units for air conditioning. Spacepak systems can satisfy cooling capacities from 12,000 to 60,000 BTU’s and heating capacities from 24,000 – 143,000.

Superior Comfort

Spacepak is a superior heating and cooling system which works on the principle of aspiration. Spacepak pioneered and perfected the concept of “aspiration,” ultilizing a high velocity air stream to gently mix with the air in the room for uniform draft free comfort. Hot and cold spots as well as annoying drafts, common with conventional heating and cooling systems, or window units are virtually eliminated. Rooms throughout the house stay a comfortable, uniform temperature. The Spacepak’s unique cooling method removes 30% more relative humidity from the air than traditional systems. This means that even in the warmest, most humid months, the air in your home will will be dryer , and more comfortable.
